Gunshu Project

Stylized Animation, 2024

This is a personal project I worked on during my free time after working hours. I created the 3D animation using Maya and also experimented with ground destruction effects, which marks one of my first FX projects using Houdini!

Work Breakdown

I've always been curious about animating body mechanic with a staff weapon. It seemed complex and I often wondered how animators set up weapons, especially when they switch between both hands. Technical animation can feel intimidating, but once you tackle it, it brings a sense of joy. Since I had limited experience in game animation, I frequently discussed the technical aspects with my colleagues, focusing on improving posing and other details. I also took the chance to hone my game animation skills by considering all 360 angle, even though I knew I'd be using a camera in the end. While there's still some of the technical set up that break easily, I believe I've learned a lot from this project.

In the early stage, I was still exploring my ideas and relied heavily on the references I found online. However, designing the combo was particularly tricky for me. My initial version felt too repetitive and lacked contrasts. I then tried to break the repetitiveness by changing the last attack and adding a settling motion at the end. I also adjusted the last camera movement to match with the FX. While I believe there's still a room for improvement, I plan to revisit the shot and refine it further one day.
